What a Queensland Plumbing Licence Covers
Queensland licenses plumbing in two layers. The person on the tools holds an occupational licence, and the business taking the job on holds a contractor licence, with the QBCC issuing both.
The occupational licence shows the holder has the trade skills. A contractor licence shows the business behind the job can carry it financially and run it properly.
Three licence classes split the trade:
- A plumber's licence authorises work on water supply and fixtures, short of jobs needing a specialist endorsement.
- A drainer's licence authorises the below-ground drainage side of a job.

Who Checks Plumbing Work and What You Receive
Checking is split between two organisations. The QBCC licenses plumbers, keeps the notifiable work records and investigates unlicensed jobs, while the local council issues permits, assesses applications and inspects.
What lands in your hands depends on the work:
- Notifiable work earns you a Form 4 copy, and the QBCC will provide one on request if it never arrives.
- Finished gas work on a fresh installation or an alteration comes with a gas compliance certificate, handed over straight away, with a copy to the network operator within 5 days.
You're also entitled to ask the council to look over notifiable jobs as they progress. An inspector may attend with the occupier's consent.
