Tap and Toilet Repairs in Banyo

200+ five-star Google reviews

A dripping tap never fixes itself, and neither does a cistern trickling through the night. Tap and toilet repairs around Banyo are everyday work for us: leaking spouts, cisterns that keep running, and flushes that have lost their push. Ring (07) 3523 6417 and a licensed plumber sorts it, same-day where we can.

The full service list sits on the Banyo home page. This page stays on the fixtures themselves: what we repair, what the law lets you touch, and the efficiency rules that shape what goes in.

Washers, Valves and Cracked Porcelain

A worn washer, cartridge or inlet valve sits behind most of the faults we get called to, so repair covers far more ground here than replacement. A washer-style tap usually ends in a replacement washer, or in dressing the valve seat. A dripping mixer usually ends in a new ceramic disc cartridge.

Cisterns follow the same pattern. Running or leaking cisterns usually come down to replacing the inlet valve and the outlet washer, as long as the body is sound.

Cracks and heavy corrosion end the repair option. Once porcelain splits, or a tap body corrodes through, the fixture itself gets replaced. A tap or toilet back for repairs every few months also often costs less to swap than to keep patching, and we weigh that per job.

The housing stock keeps washer taps common on our runs. St Pius' Primary opened on Apperley Street in 1947, right as the postwar build-out was getting going, and the weatherboard and brick-veneer houses of those years still run on washers rather than cartridges.

What Tap and Toilet Work Needs a Licence

Only a narrow slice of washer work stays open to you as a householder; the rest of tap and toilet plumbing belongs to a QBCC licensee. Queensland sorts the work into three boxes:

  1. Unregulated work

a tap's jumper valve and washer, plus the washers inside a cistern (drop valve, float valve and the suction-cup rubber). No licence, approval or report applies, and the finished job still needs to meet the code's minimum standard.

  2. Minor work

repairing or replacing a tap or toilet fitting. A QBCC licensee handles the job, without a permit or a Form 4.

  3. Notifiable work

putting in a new fixture such as a toilet, or relocating an old one. A council permit is not needed; the QBCC gets a Form 4 within 10 business days of the job finishing, and you keep a copy.

Swapping a whole tap sits outside the homeowner list as well. The QBCC guide names tap replacement as its own example of work that needs a licence.

Water Efficiency Rules for Taps and Toilets

WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) is the national scheme that registers taps, toilets and cisterns for water efficiency and rates them by stars. The label on the product shows its star rating and its rated water use. WaterMark certification covers the same fixtures, and it is the credential behind a legal install.

  1. New builds carry minimums

Under the state's sustainable housing rules, a new house, townhouse or unit needs a dual flush toilet of at least 4 stars and every tap fitting and showerhead at 3 stars or better. Renovations sit outside those minimums.

  2. Rentals carry flow caps

Queensland tenancy rules set them before an owner can pass a water charge to a tenant:

  • Indoors, cold taps and single mixers over a basin, kitchen sink or trough: no more than 9 litres per minute.
  • Dual flush toilets: the full flush stays within 6.5 litres, the half flush within 3.5, and the average at or below 4 litres per flush.
  • Taps on a bath, garden taps outdoors and feeds to laundry appliances sit outside the cap.

Who Pays for Water a Drip Wastes

No, water running out of a leaking tap or a trickling cistern stays on the owner's account. Urban Utilities runs a concealed leak adjustment, but it targets hidden pipe faults and leaves dripping fittings out.

The owner holds primary responsibility for leaks on the property and the losses from them. Urban Utilities looks after the mains up to your meter, and every pipe from there inward is yours.

The waste builds faster than people expect. Thousands of litres can trickle away over a season from one worn washer.

Questions About Taps and Toilets

Call (07) 3523 6417

What tap and toilet problems do you fix around Banyo?

We cover the lot: leaks at the spout, handle or base, cisterns that keep trickling, flushes gone weak, and stop taps or connections past their best. The tap repairs page goes deeper on spindles and cartridges, and the toilet repairs page covers valves, seals and the pan connector.

Can I legally change a tap or cistern washer myself?

Yes, for the small parts the QBCC lists: the washer set inside a tap, and the washers within a cistern. The work still needs to reach the standard the plumbing code sets. Replacing a whole tap or toilet is licensed work.

What do the stars on a tap or toilet label mean?

The stars come from WELS, short for Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards. The label shows a product's star rating and rated water use, and registration is required before it can be sold or installed. Taps, toilets and cisterns also need WaterMark certification.

Does the water utility cover a leaking tap or toilet?

No, it does not. A utility's concealed leak adjustment excludes water running out of leaking taps and cisterns, and the owner carries that loss for every pipe inside the boundary. The adjustment is reserved for hidden pipe faults.

Who arranges tap or toilet repairs in a Banyo rental?

Queensland tenancy law puts upkeep on the owner or agent, and the tenant flags faults as they appear. A broken or blocked toilet is on the emergency repair list, so it gets urgent attention. Charging a tenant for water depends on the flow caps above.

Is the call-out free for a tap or toilet job?

Yes. Every job carries $0 call-out fees, and there is no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays. You also get a fixed quote before any work starts, and card and EFTPOS payment is taken on site.
