Isolation Valve, Inlet Hose and Waste Connection
Three parts make up the connection: the isolation valve, the inlet hose and the waste hose. Each one has a job, and each one gets checked before we go.
Isolation valve
A small valve on the supply, fitted within easy reach under the bench. It lets one appliance be shut off alone for servicing or a later swap, without killing water to every tap in the place.
Inlet hose
The flexible feed between valve and machine. The appliance's install sheet sets the length and the fittings, and we inspect each end for weeping.
Waste hose
The drain hose ties into the sink trap through its own outlet and rises into a loop above it. That loop stops dirty water siphoning back into the machine between washes.
Before we leave, the machine goes through a full wash cycle. We watch for drips at the valve, at every joint and along the drain run. The power supply is a separate job for another trade.

Who May Connect a Dishwasher in Queensland
Yes, the connections for water and waste belong to a licensed plumber. The QBCC holds that line to protect homes, health and property rights.
The jobs a householder may do without a licence are few, and dishwashers are nowhere among them:
- swapping a filter cartridge or a shower head
- tap washers and their jumper valves
- cistern washers inside the toilet
- grates and caps at ground level
- irrigation past a garden tap
Licence status is checkable through the QBCC's public register. On the product side, the dishwasher carries water efficiency registration only, with no WaterMark scheme entry. The fittings are the reverse: WaterMark certification and a listing on the product register come before installation.

Swapping a Dishwasher Versus Adding a New Point
A swap reuses the connections already inside the cabinet; a new point calls for fresh pipework. The split changes both the work and the paperwork.
The swap
We disconnect and remove the old machine, then hook the new one onto the existing supply and waste points. The isolation valve gets checked or fitted, hoses past their best get replaced, and the drain gets tested.
The new point
Where the cabinet has never held a machine, we extend the supply pipe and rework the waste to reach it. In an existing house, that makes the job notifiable: no permit from council, no compulsory inspection, just a Form 4 lodged with the QBCC within 10 business days of completion.
A copy of that Form 4 goes to you for your records. One exception lifts the job into permit work. Buildings that share a combined drain, or run on dual reticulation, need a council permit first, so we apply before starting.
Unit owners should check with us which category applies.

What Sets the Price of Dishwasher Installation
The price turns on three things: whether the points exist, the access behind the cabinet, and the lodgement paperwork when a new point goes in. A fixed quote before any work starts keeps all of it visible.
Existing or new point
A swap onto existing connections is the smaller job. A new point adds pipe, fittings and labour.
Access
Crowded sink cabinets slow the run down compared with open ones.
Form 4 fee
We lodge the notice and pay the fee, and that cost plus administration can be passed on to the owner.

Older Kitchens and New Points
The era of the house decides how a new point goes in. Area-level building approvals counted 183 dwellings in 2021-22 alone, so plenty of benches here are getting their first machine.
The pre-1947 weatherboard homes clustered around Gold Street near the station tell the other story. Their kitchens often join galvanised pipe straight to copper, so a fresh dishwasher point means tying into mixed metals that corrode at the threads.
We allow for that in the quote rather than finding it mid-job. If the sink is on your list too, our kitchen sink installation guide covers that job.

Your Dishwasher Questions Answered
Call (07) 3523 6417Can I install a dishwasher myself in Queensland?
No, the plumbing side is licensed work. The QBCC's unregulated list leaves dishwasher connections off it, so the hookups stay with a licensed plumber. You can still unpack the machine and slide it into place.
Can a dishwasher go in a Banyo kitchen with no water or waste point?
Yes. Fresh supply pipe and a reworked waste line reach the cabinet. The work is notifiable, so a Form 4 goes to the QBCC inside 10 business days, with a copy to you.
Does a new dishwasher point in Banyo need a council permit?
No, not in an ordinary house, because the work is notifiable rather than permit work. A permit only applies to buildings on shared drains or dual reticulated supplies, so check with us which category applies.
What do the stars on a dishwasher's water label mean?
The stars mark a registration under the national water efficiency scheme. The label states the star count and the water a cycle uses, so more stars means less water per wash.
Why does a dishwasher need its own isolation valve?
A dedicated tap on the supply isolates the machine for servicing or a swap, without turning off water to the rest of the house. It sits before the inlet hose, within reach under the bench.
